How many matrices are there?

When Neo is pulled from the matrix he hardly believes this new setting is reality.  Even though Morpheus is certain that he is in the "real" world could there be more than one matrix?  For example is the "real" world merely a matrix set up by the humans to trick the artificial intelligences.  There could be limitless levels of reality.
Another thought: Does time continue in the Matrix?  Has it always been the year 1999 in the matrix or will the robots allow the humans to continue through time in the matrix.
Can something be invented by an inhabitant of the matrix that hasn't been invented outside of it?
Expanding on this question, could a brilliant programer in the matrix write a more advanced program than the matrix.  What if, for example, an artificial intelligence were invented by a human in the matrix?  Would it be bound by the human's mind and obey the limits he forces his body to obey or would it be unable to be tricked and see through the Matrix?

  1. well, there are many kinds of food in the matrix and theres only that slimy crap in the real world, theres probably new invetions in the matrix based off real world inventions

and i dont believe that people in the matrix can program a more advanced program with the matrix, the computer thinks in codes and programs, its like saying a rat can think more like you than you can

  2. While it is an interesting thought, there is nothing in the film to sugest that the "real world" is another level of natrix. True it would be impossible for anyone to tell, but since there's no evidence for it, the best conclusion is that the "rwal world" is in fact the real world, al la occam's razor. In response to the second part, my guess is that the matrix would have to continue chronologicaly, people would notice if the year was always 1999, and we do know that they think that the year is 1999 and can infer from this that the concept of years has been worked into the program of the matrix. I think the Matrix will continue up until the point were humans create AI, and this part will be overwritten, and the matrix will continue in a fictional version of the future.

  3. As for the time in the matrix i believe the it is always 1999 because the robots control the world as well as humanity. The matrix brings a sense of time warp into the story.

  4. I think time continues, otherwise it would probably become apparent to the people in the matrix. Although the agents are powerful, I don't think they can stop time, since they were originally part of the regular human world.
